The Griparis Family (Delianos)

Eleni Gripari (born on Delos in 1894) was the daughter of Andreas Griparis and Anna Policandrioti. After the birth of the youngest child Vasilis, Eleni's mother Anna Policandrioti-Gripari died and Andreas remarried. Eleni had 4 siblings at this point: Vasilis, Vaggelo (Santorineos), Flora (Xidakis), and Katerno (Rousonelos).

This photo shows Andreas with his second wife Anezzo.  Together they had 5 more children.  From the left is Maria Gripari -Tsouma, Stathis (father of Anesso Madoupa Nazos and grandfather of Dr. Demtrios Nazos of Joliet), John,  Marika Gripari-Kousathana, and Anezo Gripari-Dactilidid (not pictured).  I had the opportunity to meet my great Uncle Stathis and Thea Marika when I visited Mykonos with my parents in 1974).  Not pictured is Anezo Gripari-Dactilidis.

The name Griparis is very common on Mykonos. It's origin is traced to Sicily in the 12th century when these Greeks traveled to Crete and the to the Cyclades group of Islands that include Mykonos. The story goes that a type of fishing boat called "Gripa" used at the time became the basis of the name. Families are identified by a nickname that was derived from either a profession or some other family or personal trait. Delos was a shipping port that transferred (among other cargo) wheat arriving from Russia destined for Africa and Egypt. Andreas worked and lived there with his family - hence the family nickname "Delianos".
