HONIOTES

 FAMILY HISTORY

From Crete and Mykonos to Joliet, IL USA

Ioannis and Eleni Honiotes were the proud parents of 8 children. Oldest to youngest: Anna (Calamaras), Zougano (called John), Andreas (Andy), Nicolas (Nick), Dimitri (Jim), Panayiotis (Pete), Vasili (Bill), and Yiorgos (George). Centuries ago in Greece, naming a first-born son after yourself was a right reserved only for the King. The common people named their first son after the Grandfather. John was named for Ioannis' father Zougano. Anna was named for Eleni's mother Anna Polikandriotes. According to Thea Anna Calamaras she was originally going to be named "Marlo" for her paternal grandmother. Just like the scene from the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", " The man is the head of house but the woman is the neck.....".  Obviously, Eleni's decision was final.
